Chromatic
Fields
......The fact that Marialuisa Sponga uses a sewing
machine for her
assemblages is significant. It is as if something more than
traditional cubist
overlaying were necessary to assemble the dispersed pieces
of the image and
that the border had to be followed so precisely so as not
to allow any dispersion
and ensure the endurance of its contiguity.

......In
the textile work "Campi Cromatici" (Chromatic Fields)
Marialuisa
Sponga revisits traditionally feminine techniques and instruments
to obtain
original forms of writing. With the assemblage of textiles and
threads, laid in
such a way so as to compose a sort of hieroglyphic writing,
she unites synthetic
and metallic materials, a cyber figure of her works. |

......The
hope of a communion between man and the environment is
identified in the assemblage "Campi Cromatici 3"
(Chromatic Fields 3), from
the Civic Collection of Textile Art in Chieri. The gauze and
the cloths, made
tumid with wadding, present themselves in an articulate creased
manner, which
becomes a metaphor of biological diversity. The pale colours
manifest their
chromatic spectrum heightened by the embossed unwinding of
the textiles.
The backgrounds are not rigid but they intersect and wind
into a dimension
pertaining to organic nature. What unfurls is an analytical
outlook on the infinite
variety of existing things which can be enjoyed thanks to
the instant brought to a
standstill in the composition.

How
do Marialuisa Sponga's works fascinate me?
Perhaps it the structure of the lines traced out by the sewing
machine which
dutifully lends itself to produce volutes; these in turn become
a pattern in
which chromatic bulks and the plainness of the textiles are
arranged. I was
struck by the natural force expressed by the textile substance
which seems
to burst out from the composition, immediately embraced by
the gauze, under
which the out-breaking of the yarn product is held in and
stopped. Marialuisa
Sponga's art has the gift of cheering with its nostalgic colours
and the firm
persistence of its lines. The sewing machine needle, apparently
rigid and hostile,
complies to an artful use of writing and displays all its
versatility, proposing sharp
dynamics which are highly mastered. The gentleness of the
gauze, enhanced by
the wadding, presents an organic dimension, almost as if it
were a surface to be
caressed.
